Soothe XP® Artificial Tears Thicken the Lipid Layer of the Tears and Help Relieve Dry, Irritated Eye Symptoms

Soothe XP Artificial Tears is One of the Treatments on the First Line of Defense against Dry, Irritated Eyes

The lipid (oil) layer of the tear film is the outer layer of the tear film and is critical to the proper function and integrity of the tears.  The tear film lipids are secreted by the meibomian glands in the eyelids. Dry eye patients with a thin or irregular lipid layer can have four times the aqueous (middle watery layer) evaporation rates found in healthy eyes. Lipids help the tear film maintain its structure. They also enter the middle aqueous layer and interact with other tear film components such as mucin proteins.

The lipid layer is comprised of as many as 50 different kinds of lipids including cholesterol.

Lipid Layer Improvement is One of the First Treatments Needed in Dry Eye Disease

Two decades of research have taught us a lot about dry eye disease and how to restore the lipid layer. Lipid layer improvement is now viewed as an essential therapy in the battle against dry eye disease.  The lipid layer functions are vital and include:

  • Preventing evaporation of fluid  from the aqueous (watery) middle layer of the tears
  • Providing lubrication that makes the tear film more "spreadable" and decreasing friction
  • Promoting a smooth, clear refracting surface for good vision

Most artificial tear lubricant eye drops simply provide moisture which can evaporate quickly from the surface of the eye.  Bausch & Lomb Soothe®XP Emollient (Lubricant) Eye Drops provide moisture and contain Restoryl®, the advanced lipid restorative which provides a barrier to tear loss for relief that lasts up to 8 hours.

Soothe XP Artificial Tears lubricant eye drops

Normally, nature provides your eyes with the ideal protection - a multi-layered combination of protein, water and oils (called lipids) that coats the eye's surface between blinks, keeping it moist, lubricated and comfortable. The outermost layer, which contains lipids, works to retain moisture and prevent tear fluid loss due to evaporation.

People with dry eyes often have a thin or missing lipid layer which results in an inadequate amount of tear fluid due to evaporation. The result may be burning, tired, irritated eyes and/or blurred vision. If the lipid layer is thin or missing, the watery layer evaporates quickly and eyes become fatigued, red, gritty and sandy feeling.  Ordinary lubricant eye drops simply provide more moisture which can evaporate quickly from the surface of the eyes.  Many artificial tears can even increase the osmolarity of the tears and cause further dryness.

Thin or Missing Lipids Allow Drying of the Eyes

The advanced emollient (lubricant) formulation in SootheXP, which contains the lipid restorative Restoryl, not only restores moisture, but also completes the lipid layer with every drop, treating your eyes to long-lasting, soothing relief.

Tear Film with SootheXP

Soothe XP has several primary components including water, Restoryl and Interfacial molecules:

Water restores much needed moisture to the tear film.

Restoryl® is the main ingredient in Soothe®XP.  Restoryl® isan advanced mixture of two highly purified mineral oils (Drakeol®-15 and Drakeol®-35). Restoryl thickens the lipid, oily, outer tear layer.  The thicker lipid layer retains moisture inside the tear film by decreasing evaporation of the watery layer and works for up to eight hours.  These oils serve a function similar to the oils found in natural, healthy tears.

Although Soothe XP can provide up to eight hours of relief, it is gentle and can be used as often as needed.

Interfacial molecules help adhere the aqueous (watery) layer and the lipid (oil) layer together.

Soothe XP has been proven safe and effective by many studies. It meets the FDA requirements for over the counter eye care products.

Soothe XP has a "milky white" appearance and will cause temporary blurred vision upon instillation for 20-30 seconds.

Soothe XP is one aspect of a comprehensive treatment for dry eyes.  Treatment may also include omega 3's, tear drainage duct occlusion (punctal occlusion), Restasis and Lotemax.
